World War II around Europe
Before the US entered the war, Britain and France were already battling the Axis Powers in Europe. While the Allied Forces more industrial resources, population, and manpower, the Axis had more firepower than the Allied Forces, who only had a slightly higher amount than in World War II. After Germany successfully invaded Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium, Germany also successfully invaded and took over France in the June of 1940. French rebels continued to fight against Germany, but for the most part, France was taken out of the war.
After the invasion of France, Germany started to try to invade Great Britain. From July 10 to October 31, an air war is fought over Great Britain, which is known as the Battle of Britain, and Germany eventually loses. On June 22, 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union, which was previously Germany's ally. This caused the Soviet Union to switch to the Allies and battle the Axis. Throughout the Summer and Autumn, Germany and the Soviet Union battled each other in the Soviet Union, and on December 6, 1941, The Soviet Union successfully drove the Germans out of Moscow, forcing Germany to leave the Soviet Union. The next day, the the bombing of Pearl Harbor forces the US to join the war against Germany , Italy, and Japan.
On June 1943, the allied forces took control of Southern Italy, as well as Sicily. Mussolini the dictator of Italy was soon taken down. Germany, however, still had control of Northern Italy until it surrendered. On June 6, 1944, the allied forces stormed French beaches, where one of the biggest military operations in World War II occurred. That day, 150,000 allied soldiers stormed the French beaches to liberate France from Germany. At the end of August, France was successfully liberated, and the allied forces then managed to cross the borders of Germany on September 11, 1944, and the Soviet Union crossed the border a month ago. In 1945, the Soviet Union successfully liberated western Poland, and forced Hungary to surrender. On April 30, 1945, Hitler committed suicide, and Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945, ending the war in Europe. A few months later, the war in the Pacific would also end, signifying the end of World War II.
